Seventeen Speedcars
turned out for the first official
practice at the Perth Motorplex last
night. With some cars finished in their
new livery and some still waiting to be
sign written. One immediate standout
that was sporting a new paint scheme was
Neville Lance; he immediately went to
work and was on the pace from the onset.
With the Ford powerplant Lance had the
Murphy running the high line whilst
others chose to run low. “I was pretty
happy with the run tonight, the car
seems strong so we will see what happens
on Saturday night”. Said Lance.
Another strong
runner was East Coast driver Matt Young
running the Rinkin backed mount. Young
had a small fuel issue in his first run
and got that sorted to come out and
really stretch his legs in the second
and third run. “We tried different lines
for each run and it got better as the
night went on”. Young Said.
Young has also picked
up a local sponsor whilst in Perth for
the Weekend in Watsons Transport; the
company not only brought the car over
but also have supplied a great crew for
the weekend to help Matt out. “I can’t
thank Watsons enough, they have been
awesome in their support and I hope we
can give them a good result on Saturday
night”.
It was great to see
the “Jive Man” Keith Giles back in
action behind the wheel of a midget,
Giles is running the Wayne Cover owned
car in the Magic Man 34 this weekend and
if he runs in the race anything like he
was at practice he is going to be a
threat.
Nathan Smee had a
mixed bag in the Steven Graham owned
car, having a few handling issues in his
first and second run, Barry and Steven
(Graham) made a few changes on the car
which allowed Smee to show some very
good pace. “I wasn’t sure what was
causing the problem I just couldn’t get
it around the turns, I left it to the
Grahams to change it around and the car
just got better after that, those Hawk
engines have some horsepower that’s for
sure”
Dene McAllen
appeared to be playing his cards close
to his chest all night, running
consistent but not explosive.
Emotions were
running high for a number of driver’s
last night one being Rick Geneve who is
Michael’s (Figliomeni) cousin. Getting
the nod from car owner John Bryant to
run the car in the race, the Sprintcar
star put a heap of laps under his belt
to get comfortable in the car and by the
end of the night was lapping well on the
pace.
Local Robert Harvey
donned the race gear for the first time
since his horrific crash last year,
Harvey was caught in a fireball and was
airlifted from Narrogin to Royal Perth
Hospital to receive urgent medical
attention on his burns. It’s nearly
twelve months on and Robert is still
recovering but he was determined to make
the race. “I don’t know what’s happening
after this race but I wasn’t going to
miss this race”. Harvey Said.
